NGC 1744 (also ESO 486-5, MCG -4-12-29, IRAS 04579-2605 and PGC 16517) is a magnitude +11.1 spiral galaxy located about 34 million light-years away in the constellation Lepus.
The galaxy was discovered by British astronomer John Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) f/13 speculum reflecting telescope at Feldhausen, Claremont, Cape Town on the 20th November 1835.
