NGC 2217 (also ESO 489-42, MCG -5-15-10, AM 0619-271, IRAS 06196-2712 and PGC 18883) is a magnitude +10.7 face-on barred spiral galaxy located 75 million light years away in the constellation Canis Major. Tightly wound spiral arms form an almost circular ring around the galaxy.
The galaxy was discovered by British astronomer John Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 Inch) reflecting telescope at Feldhausen, Claremont, Cape Town, on the 20th January 1835.
