On March 8, 1981, a type 1a supernova was discovered 51 arcseconds to the northeast of the galactic center of NGC 4536. It reached a peak visual magnitude of 12 on March 8 before steadily fading from view over the next two months. No prior supernova events have been observed in this galaxy.
NGC 4536 (also UGC 7732, MCG 0-32-23, ZWG 14.68 and PGC 41823) is a magnitude +11.1 spiral galaxy located 55 million light years away in the constellation Virgo.
The galaxy was discovered by German-British astronomer William Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) reflecting telescope at Datchet, Berkshire, on the 24th January 1784.
