NGC 2227 (also ESO 556-23, MCG -4-16-4, IRAS06238-2158 and PGC 19030) is a magnitude +12.6 spiral galaxy located 104 million light-years away in the constellation Canis Major.
The galaxy was discovered by British astronomer John Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) reflecting telescope at Feldhausen, Claremont, Cape Town, on the 27th January 1835.
