NGC 4542 (also NGC 4537, UGC 7746 MCG 9-21-21 and PGC 41864) is a magnitude +14.4 lenticular galaxy located 547 million light-years away in the constellation Canes Venatici.
The galaxy was discovered by British astronomer John Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) f/13 speculum reflector at Windsor Road, Slough, on the 17th February 1831. The galaxy was rediscovered by Lewis Swift in 1884 and relisted as NGC 4537
