NGC 5994 (also UGC 10033, MCG 3-40-38, Arp 72 and PGC 56020) is a magnitude +14.8 barred spiral galaxy located 151 million light-years away in the constellation Serpens. The galaxy is gravitationally interacting with the neighbouring galaxy NGC 5996: these two galaxies are listed as Arp 72 in the Atlas of peculiar galaxies.
The galaxy was discovered by Bindon Blood Stoney, assistant to Irish astronomer William Parsons, using a 182.88 cm (72 inch) reflecting telescope at Birr castle on the 9th March 1851.
