NGC 3974 (also MCG -2-31-1, IRAS 12312-1145 and PGC 37452) is a magnitude +13.4 barred spiral galaxy located 253 million light-years away in the constellation Crater.
The galaxy was discovered by British astronomer John Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) f/13 speculum reflector at Windsor Road, Slough, on the 9th March 1828.
