NGC 3540 (also NGC 3548, UGC 6196 and PGC 33806) is a magnitude +13.8 elliptical galaxy located 294 million light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major. In the sky it can be found roughly 17' south of HD 96813.
The galaxy was discovered by British astronomer John Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) f/13 speculum reflector at Windsor Road, Slough, on the 11th March 1831. The galaxy was rediscovered by John Herschel in February 1832 and relisted as NGC 3548.
