NGC 5970 (also MCG+02-40-006, UGC 9943 and PGC 55665) is a magnitude +11.5 barred spiral galaxy located 90 million light-years away in the constellation Serpens.
The galaxy was discovered by German-British astronomer William Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) f/13 speculum reflector at Datchet, Berkshire, on the 15th March 1784.

NGC 5970 can be seen 1° southwest of the star Chi Serpentis. A faint halo of dust can be seen around the galaxy's outer spiral arms. Read more
