NGC 2438 (PK 231+4.2) is a magnitude +10.8 planetary nebula located about 2,900 light-years away in the constellation Puppis.
The planetary nebula was discovered by German-British astronomer William Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) f/13 speculum reflector at Clayhall Farm House in Old Windsor, on March 19, 1786.

The planetary nebula NGC 2438 appears to lie within the cluster M46, but it is most likely unrelated since it does not share the cluster's radial velocity. Read more
