NGC 4540 (also IRAS 12323+1549, MCG 3-32-74, UGC 7742 and PGC 41876) is a magnitude +11.7 spiral galaxy located 59 million light-years away in the constellation Coma Berenices.
The galaxy was discovered by German-British astronomer William Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) f/13 speculum reflector at Datchet, Berkshire, on the 21st March 1784.
