NGC 4942 (also IC 4136, IRAS 13017-0723, MCG -1-33-78 and PGC 45177) is a magnitude +13.0 intermediate spiral galaxy located 80 million light-years away in the constellation Virgo.
The galaxy was discovered by German-British astronomer William Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) f/13 speculum reflector at Windsor Road, Slough, on the 23rd March 1789. The galaxy was rediscovered by DeLisle Stewart in July 1899 and listed as IC 4136.
