NGC 5942 (also MCG 1-40-1 and PGC 55309) is a magnitude +14.4 lenticular galaxy located 490 million light-years away in the constellation Serpens.
The galaxy was discovered by American astronomer Lewis Swift using a 40.64 cm (16 inch) refractor on the 19th April 1887.
