NGC 5940 (also IRAS 15288+0737, MCG 1-39-25, UGC 9876 and PGC 55295) is a magnitude +13.4 face-on spiral galaxy located 467 million light-years away in the constellation Serpens.
The galaxy was discovered by American astronomer Lewis Swift using a 40.6 cm (16 inch) Alvan Clark and Sons refractor at the Warner Observatory, East Avenue, Rochester, New York, on the 19th April 1887.
