NGC 5979 (also ESO 136-PN3, PK 322-5.1 and HD 140586) is a magnitude +11.5 planetary nebula located 11.700 light-years away in the constellation Triangulum Australe.
The planetary nebula was discovered by British astronomer John Herschel using a 45.72 cm (18 inch) f/13 speculum reflector at the Cape of Good Hope on the 24th April 1835.
