The Obama administration has introduced a ban on offshore oil drilling in the Arctic for at least five years. The move is a significant victory for environmentalists who have campaigned for years against drilling in the ecologically fragile region. But the ban could be overturned by Donald Trump, who has previously pledged to increase offshore drilling. Read more
Total turns on gas from West of Shetland Laggan and Tormore fields
The first gas has begun flowing to the mainland from vast reserves west of Shetland. A gas plant in Shetland has been fired up by Total, capable of supplying energy to up to two million homes. A flare was lit at the moment that gas started flowing from the Laggan and Tormore fields, 125km north west of the Shetland. Read more
A government report estimating that there are several billion barrels of oil in shale rocks under large parts of southern England is to be published on Friday, the BBC understands. The report, by the British Geological Survey (BGS), covers parts of Sussex, Hampshire and Kent. Getting it out of the ground will involve the controversial process known as fracking. Read more
Oil has been found off the coasts of Liberia and Sierra Leone, energy companies have announced. African Petroleum and Anadarko say further tests are needed to see how commercially viable the finds are. Read more
The Forties Oil Field is the largest oil field in the North Sea, 110 miles east of Aberdeen. It was discovered in 1970 and first produced oil in 1975 under ownership of BP. Significant Natural Gas Resources Remain to Be Discovered in Cook Inlet, Alaska
The Cook Inlet Region of Alaska contains an estimated mean of 19 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, about 600 million barrels of oil, and 46 million barrels of natural gas liquids, according to a new assessment by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). This estimate is of undiscovered, technically recoverable oil and gas resources, and includes both unconventional and conventional resources. These gas estimates are significantly more than the last USGS assessment of southern Alaska in 1995, in which a mean of 2.14 trillion cubic feet of gas was estimated. This increase in the undiscovered resource is attributed to new geologic information and data. Read more
ExxonMobil Announces Three Discoveries in Deepwater Gulf of Mexico
Exxon Mobil Corporation today announced two major oil discoveries and a gas discovery in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico after drilling the company's first post-moratorium deepwater exploration well. The KC919-3 wildcat well confirmed the presence of a second oil accumulation in Keathley Canyon block 919. The well encountered more than 475 feet of net oil pay and a minor amount of gas in predominantly Pliocene high-quality sandstone reservoirs. The well, which is continuing to drill deeper, is located 250 miles southwest of New Orleans in approximately 7,000 feet of water. Drilling in early 2010 encountered oil and natural gas at Hadrian North in KC919 and extending into KC918, with over 550 feet of net oil pay and a minor amount of gas in high-quality Pliocene and Upper Miocene sandstone reservoirs. Curlew Lake Resources, a Junior Exploration Company, Has Commenced Drilling a Significant Oil Target
Curlew Lake Resources Inc. (the "Company") announces that it commenced drilling a New Pool Wildcat on its Fairydell-Bon Accord prospect in central Alberta on November 3rd. The drilling program is estimated to take about one week. Pictures of the site can be found at www.curlew-lake.com under the Fairydell section. As previously announced on November 1st, the Company is operator and has a majority working interest in the well. The Company will retain a 53 percent working interest in the well before payout and a 64 percent working interest after payout. Curlew Lake is focusing exploration on areas where basement structure and faulting, often related to events such as meteorite impacts, has given rise to reef building, and particularly to fault bound build-ups in the Devonian. These have resulted in off-reef, patch reefs and fringing reef structures that are important exploration targets. Read more
