NGC 6221 (also ESO 138-3, IRAS 16484-5908 and PGC 59175) is a magnitude +9.9 barred spiral galaxy located 69 million light-years away in the constellation Ara.
The galaxy was discovered by British astronomer John Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) f/13 speculum reflector at the Cape of Good Hope on the 3rd May 1835.
