NGC 4838 (also IRAS 12552-1247, MCG -2-33-74 and PGC 44383) is a magnitude +13.0 spiral galaxy located 231 million light-years away in the constellation Virgo.
The galaxy was discovered by British astronomer John Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) f/13 speculum reflector at Windsor Road, Slough, on the 9th May 1831.
