NGC 4240 (also NGC 4243, MCG -2-31-29 and PGC 39411) is a magnitude +12.3 elliptical galaxy located 91 million light-years away in the constellation Virgo.
The galaxy was discovered by German astronomer Ernst Wilhelm Leberecht Tempel using a 27.94 cm (11 inch) refractor at the Arcetri Observatory on the 20th May 1875. The galaxy was rediscovered by Lewis Swift in April 1886 and relisted as NGC 4243
