NGC 6172 (also IC 1213, MCG 0-42-3, UGC 10352 and PGC 57937) is a magnitude +12.8 elliptical galaxy located 230 million light-years away in the constellation Serpens.
The galaxy was discovered by French astronomer Edouard Stephan using a 80.01 cm (31.5 inch) reflecting telescope at the Marseille Observatory on the 21st June 1884. The galaxy was rediscovered by Lewis A. Swift in April 1890 and relisted as IC 1213.
