NGC 6742 (also Abell 50 and PK 078+18 1) is a magnitude +13.4 planetary nebula located in the constellation Draco. The planetary nebula can be found abut 03' north-east of a magnitude +8.9 star TYC 3545-1227-1 A small foreground star can be seen on the north-east rim of the planetary nebula. In the center of the nebula is a magnitude +19.4 white dwarf star, with a temperature of approx. 100,000 K. Despite the fact that its dimensions are similar to the Earth, it has a mass of over 50 solar masses.
The planetary nebula was discovered by German-British astronomer William Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) f/13 speculum reflector at Windsor Road, Slough, on the 8th July 1788.
