NGC 4401 (also MCG 6-27-53) is a magnitude +14.0 HII emission nebula that is part of the galaxy NGC 4395, located in the constellation Canes Venatici.
The emission nebula was discovered by British astronomer John Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) f/13 speculum reflecting telescope at Slough, England, on the 29th July 1827.
