NGC 6642 (also Collinder 381, ESO 522-SC32 and GCL 97) is a magnitude +8.9 globular star cluster located 26,400 light-years away in the constellation Sagittarius.
The globular cluster was discovered by German-British astronomer William Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) f/13 speculum reflector at Datchet, Berkshire on the 7th August 1784.
