NGC 6589 (also IC 4690 and ESO 590-N14) is a magnitude +12.6 reflection nebula located in the constellation Sagittarius.
The nebula was discovered by American astronomer Truman Henry Safford using a 46.99 cm (18.5-inch) Alvan Clark & Sons refractor at Dearborn Observatory, at 3400 S. Cottage Grove Avenue, Chicago, on the 28th August 1867. The nebula was independently discovered by Lewis Swift using a 40,64 cm (16-inch) refractor in 1885. The nebula was rediscovered by Edward Barnard in August 1905 and relisted as IC 4690.
