NGC 697 (also Arp 28, NGC 674, IRAS 01485+2206, MCG 4-5-22, UGC 1317 and PGC 6848) is a magnitude +12.0 barred spiral galaxy located 142 million light-years away in the constellation Aries.
The galaxy was discovered by German-British astronomer William Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) f/13 speculum reflector at Datchet, Berkshire on the 15th September 1784. The galaxy was rediscovered by Heinrich d'Arrest in December 1861 and relisted as NGC 674.
