NGC 491 (also ESO 352-53, IRAS 01190-3419, MCG -6-4-11 and PGC 4914) is a magnitude +12.5 barred spiral galaxy located 178 million light-years away in the constellation Sculptor.
The galaxy was discovered by British astronomer John Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) f/13 speculum reflecting telescope at his Feldhausen Observatory at Wynberg in Cape Town on the 25th September 1834.
