NGC 7 (also ESO 409-22, MCG -5-1-37 and PGC 627) is a magnitude +13.5 edge-on spiral galaxy located 71.4 ±5.2 million light-years away in the constellation Sculptor.
The galaxy was discovered by British astronomer John Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) f/13 speculum reflecting telescope at his Feldhausen Observatory at Wynberg in Cape Town on the 27th September 1834.

Astronomer Steve Gottlieb described the galaxy as faint, albeit large, and edge-on from the perspective of the Milky Way; he also noted how the galaxy could only be observed clearly with the peripheral vision, not by looking directly at it. Read more
