NGC 279 (also IRAS 00495-0229, MCG 0-3-19A, UGC 532 and PGC 3055) is a magnitude +12.7 elliptical galaxy located 178 million light-years away in the constellation Cetus.
The galaxy was discovered by German-British astronomer William Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 inch) f/13 speculum reflector at Clayhall Farm House in Old Windsor on the 1st October 1785.
