NGC 238 (also ESO 194-31 and PGC 2595) is a magnitude +12.5 barred spiral galaxy located 396 million light-years away in the constellation Phoenix.
The galaxy was discovered by British astronomer John Herschel using a 47.5 cm (18.7 Inch) reflecting telescope at Feldhausen in Wynberg, Cape Town on the 2nd October 1834.
