NGC 1142 (also Arp 118, NGC 1144, IRAS 02526-0023, MCG 0-8-48, UGC 2389 and PGC 11012) is a magnitude +13.0 irregular spiral galaxy located 397 million light-years away in the constellation Cetus. The galaxy is interacting with the lenticular galaxy NGC 1141 and catalogued as Arp 118 (top right in image).
NGC 1142 was discovered by German astronomer Albert Marth using a 121.92 cm (48 inch) reflector in Malta on the 5th October 1864. The galaxy was rediscovered by Edouard Stephan in November 1876 and relisted as NGC 1144.
