NGC 740 (also MCG 5-5-31, UGC 1421 or PGC 7316) is a magnitude +14.2 spiral galaxy located 212 million light-years away in the constellation Triangulum.
The galaxy was discovered by Irish astronomer Bindon Blood Stoney, assistant to William Parsons 3rd Earl of Rosse, using the 'Parsonstown Leviathan' 182.88 cm (72 inch) reflector at Birr Castle on the 11th October 1850.
