NGC 6042 (also NGC 6039, MCG 3-41-79 and PGC 56972) is a magnitude +13.9 elliptical galaxy located 480 million light-years away in the constellation Hercules.
The galaxy was discovered by French astronomer Edouard Stephan using a 80.01 cm (31.5 inch) reflector at the Marseille Observatory on the 27th June 1870. The galaxy was rediscovered by Lewis Swift in June 1886 and relisted as NGC 6039.
