Volcano erupts with smoke in Indonesia

A volcano has erupted on Indonesia's Sumatra island, spewing thick grey smoke up to 1.5 kilometres into the sky.
Monitoring official Suparno says Mount Marapi's eruption on Wednesday is its strongest since August last year, when its status was raised to level three out of four.

Satellites tracking Mt Merapi volcanic ash clouds

Since its latest series of deadly eruptions, Java's Mt Merapi has been spewing volcanic ash clouds into the air. Satellite data are crucial for assessing the eruptions danger to air traffic and public safety.
Mt Merapi began erupting on 26 October and has killed more than 200 people. Numerous international flights in and out of the Indonesia area have been cancelled due to ash clouds.

Today, the Indonesian Volcano Mount Merapi, located in Central Java had again eruption activity continuously, which has resulted in hot ash being thrown up to 1500 meters high reaching a radius 50km.  Because of this the death toll has officially risen to 191.

At least 54 people have been killed in the latest eruption of Indonesia's Mount Merapi volcano - more than doubling the death toll since it became active again last week.
Dozens are being treated for burns and respiratory problems after a gas cloud hit villages with even greater force than the previous eruptions.

Evacuees cringed and fled for cover Monday as an erupting volcano - one of 22 showing increased activity in Indonesia - let loose booming explosions of hot gas and debris, the latest blast in a deadly week. No new casualties were reported.
The new blast from Mount Merapi came as Indonesia also struggles to respond to an earthquake-generated tsunami that devastated remote islands. The twin disasters, unfolding simultaneously on opposite ends of the seismically volatile country, have killed nearly 500 people and severely tested the government's emergency response network. In both events, the military has been called in to help.

Besides Merapi, Plenty of Other Indonesia Volcanoes to Worry About

Amid the ongoing eruption of Mount Merapi in Central Java, the authorities have warned that two other volcanoes are on heightened alert, while a third has produced 117 small eruptions since Wednesday.
The eruptions from Anak Krakatau, in the Sunda Strait, were audible as far as Serang district in Banten, about 40 kilometres away. The volcano is on Level 2 alert, meaning "beware."
