Google hit with record EU fine over Shopping service
Google has been fined 2.42bn euros ($2.7bn; £2.1bn) by the European Commission after it ruled the company had abused its power by promoting its own shopping comparison service at the top of search results. Wolfram Alpha is about to allow users to analyse and manipulate their own data - including pictures and sounds. The service is part of a new "pro" version of the data search and analysis engine to be launched on Wednesday. Read more

Google tweaks search engine to curtail content farms
Google is making a big change to its search engine algorithm that will provide higher rankings to high quality sites and lower the rankings of low quality sites. In Google's opinion, low quality sites are those which are "low-value add for users, copy content from other websites or sites that are just not very useful." High quality sites are those which have original content and contain research, in depth reports and analysis. Read more
To a layman like me, Wolfram Alpha is one incredible search engine with advanced degrees in chemistry, physics, culinary arts, meteorology, astronomy, politics, history and, quite frankly, every other topic known to man. The website, which prefers to be acknowledged as a "computational knowledge engine," generates output by computing and processing from its own internal knowledge base - not by searching the Web and returning links.
