Super typhoon Shanshan struck Japan as a typhoon at about 12:00 GMT on 17 September. Data supplied by the US Navy and Air Force Joint Typhoon Warning Centre suggest that the point of landfall was near 34.0 N, 130.6 E. Shanshan brought 1-minute maximum sustained winds to the region of around 120 km/h. Wind gusts in the area may have been considerably higher.
