A record number of celebrants from mainland China - more than 2,000 people from about 40 Mazu temples - are in the town of Dajia to witness the beginning of the Goddess of the Sea's 330km tour to bless adherents in more than 20 townships. Centuries-old festivals such as this one organised by the Dajia Jenn Lann Temple have nearly disappeared in China. Ancient sea goddess celebrated Tens of thousands of believers have gathered in the port city of Tianjin. They are there for a week-long commemoration of the goddess Mazu. We bring you the grandeur of the opening ceremony.
The Mazu Cultural Festival opened at Heavenly Queen Temple, one of the three largest shrines to the goddess. The celebration attracted more than three thousand international guests, and 40 thousand Chinese believers.
