The construction of the multibillion-rupee Diamer-Bhasha dam will submerge one of the world's greatest rock art galleries and other archaeological sites belonging to various ancient civilisations. Professor Dr Harald Hauptmann, German archaeologist and head of a research project called as “Rock Carvings and Inscriptions”, along the Karakorum Highway, expressed this fear at a press conference here on Friday.
The Diamer-Bhasha Dam is planned in the Northern Areas of Pakistan on the River Indus. It is located about 314 km upstream of Tarbela Dam and about 165 km downstream of Gilgit City. The dam is expected to create a large reservoir submerging large tracts of land in the Diamer district. The dam will have maximum height of 270 metres and impend a reservoir of about 7.4 million acre feet (9 km³).
