There will be another attempt on Sunday to launch Britain's Skynet 5 satellite. The spacecraft is part of a £3.2bn system that will deliver secure, high-bandwidth communications for the UK military and allied forces. Saturday's attempt at a lift-off from Kourou in French Guiana was thwarted by a technical glitch in ground equipment at the European spaceport. Officials have now scheduled Skynet's launcher - an Ariane 5-ECA rocket - for a 1903 local time (2203 GMT) flight.
It was one small step backwards for British military space plans as a last-minute mechanical glitch forced the abandonment of a hi-tech communications satellite launch. Skynet 5A, part of a £3.6bn programme for British armed forces, was set to blast off aboard an Ariane rocket from the European spaceport at Kourou in French Guiana. But because of concerns over a "water deluge" system, take-off was abandoned after a 33-minute launch window expired. It is now hoped the take-off will happen on Monday night.
The Launch of the Ariane 5 rocket from ELA-3, Kourou, French Guiana, was scrubbed due to a possible fault in the launch pad's water deluge system. The launch has been rescheduled to between 22:25-22:58 GMT (5:25-5:58 p.m. EST)
The British military is set to take one of its most significant steps into the digital age with the launch of the first Skynet 5 satellite. The spacecraft will deliver secure, high-bandwidth communications for UK and "friendly" forces across the globe. It is part of a multi-billion-pound project that will allow the Army, Royal Navy and RAF to pass much more data, faster between command centres. The Skynet 5A platform lifts off from Kourou, French Guiana, on Saturday.
The countdown has begun for the launch of the telecommunications satellite Insat-4B, primarily meant for direct to home (DTH) television services, on Sunday from Kourou in French Guyana. Final preparations for the launch of the satellite on board the Ariane-5 are complete.
The launch readiness review (RAL) took place in Kourou on Thursday, March 8, 2007 and authorised count-down operations for the SKYNET 5A & INSAT 4B launch. For its first launch of the year Arianespace will boost two payloads into orbit: the Skynet 5A military communications satellite for the British Ministry of Defence, and the Insat 4B civil communications satellite for ISRO, the Indian Space Research Organization. They will be launched from the Ariane launch complex N° 3 (ELA3), in Kourou, French Guiana.
The launch is scheduled during the night of March 10 to 11, 2007 as soon as possible within the following launch window:
GMT: Between 10:25pm and 10:58pm on March 10, 2007. PARIS: Between 11:25pm and 11:58pm on March 10, 2007. BANGALORE: Between 03:55am and 04:28am on March 11, 2007. WASHINGTON: Between 05:25pm and 05:58pm on March 10, 2007. KOUROU: Between 07:25pm and 07:58pm on March 10, 2007.
Preparations are in the final stages for the launch of Isro's latest satellite, Insat-4B, on board Ariane-5 ECA launch vehicle from Kourou, French Guiana. The launch window for the Ariane-5, carrying Insat-4B and its co-passenger Skynet 5A of EADS Astrium, is fixed between 03:55 am and 04:28 am Indian Standard Time on 11 March (7:25 pm to 7:58 pm 10 March, in Kourou). Insat-4B is the second satellite to be launched in the Insat-4 series. Insat-4B carries 12 high power Ku-band transponders and 12 C-band transponders to augment the capacity for direct-to-home (DTH) television services apart from augmenting the Insat capacity for other communication and television services.
Arianespace said that it has placed British military and Indian communication satellites on a rocket scheduled to launch into space this weekend. The British Defence Ministry's Skynet 5A military communications satellite and India's Insat 4B civil communications satellite will lift off on Saturday evening from the Guiana Space Centre in Kouou, French Guiana, Arianespace the commercial arm of the 13-country European Space Agency, said in a statement. The launch was delayed by one day to complete a review of the Ariane-5 ECA launcher, Arianespace spokeswoman Claudia Hoyao said Monday. She did not elaborate.
For its first launch of the year Arianespace will boost two payloads into orbit: the Skynet 5A military communications satellite for the British Ministry of Defence through Astrium subsidiary Paradigm, and the Insat 4B civil communications satellite for ISRO, the Indian Space Research Organization.
