The almost full moon shines close to a golden planet and a sparkling blue-white star tonight. The planet is Saturn, and the star is Regulus, the brightest light in the constellation Leo the Lion. Saturn ranks as the brighter of these two night sky objects, but both are easy to spot with the unaided eye.
The world's first total eclipse of the moon since October 2004 will happen early in the evening on March 3. Totality will begin at 5:44 p.m. EST and end at 6:58 p.m. EST, allowing those in the eastern half of the United States a leisurely view. The farther east you are, the better the view will be. In most of the Eastern and Central time zones, the full moon will rise in the east already fully eclipsed. Observers in the western part of the Central time zone will see the moon partially eclipsed as it gradually climbs above the horizon. Those farther to the west will see the moon nearly back to normal by the time it rises.
The only total eclipse of the moon visible to all South Africans in 2007 will take place from March 3 to 4, the Johannesburg Planetarium said on Thursday. The visible part would start from 11.30pm on the night of the 3rd until 3.12am the next day, said Planetarium director Dr Claire Flanagan. According to the Planetarium website, the eclipse officially starts at 10.18pm when the moon may might dim slightly but will not change shape visibly. At 11.30pm, the moon will change shape noticeably as it starts moving into the dark part of the earth's shadow. On March 4 at 00.44am totality will start when the moon will be completely within the earth's shadow and will probably appear slightly reddish. By 1.58am, the moon will start moving out of the earth's shadow and totality will have ended. By 3.11am, no signs of the eclipse will be evident as the moon recovers to a full state but may be slightly dimmed. By 4.24am, the eclipse will have officially ended.
