At 110-carats, the Cora Sun-Drop is roughly the size of a woman's thumb and is largest vivid yellow pear-shaped diamond known in the world.
It has been lent to London's Natural History Museum by leading US diamond manufacturer Cora International for display to visitors for a limited time from tomorrow.
Its unusual yellow colour stems from the very small percentage of nitrogen within the carbon structure of the stone.

Possible prehistoric bead is found in Suffolk

A rare piece of treasure which is believed to date back to pre-historic times could be the first find of its kind in Suffolk.
The British Museum said the gold personal ornament, which was found in Glemsford, near Sudbury, was an "important item".
It is currently in the hands of the British Museum, which carried out the report into the object, but it could come home to Suffolk.
Janina Parol, assistant treasure registrar at the British Museum, said Moyse's Hall Museum in Bury St Edmunds, Colchester and Ipswich Museum Service and the British Museum were all interested in the ornament, which is thought to be from the Bronze Age.

The Wittelsbach-Graff Diamond is a 31.06 carats (6.21 g) Fancy Deep Blue diamond with internally flawless clarity. Lawrence Graff purchased the Wittelsbach Diamond in 2008 for 16.4 million pounds Sterling. In 2010, Graff revealed he had had the diamond cut by three diamond cutters to remove flaws. The diamond was now more than 4 carats (800 mg) lighter and was renamed the Wittelsbach-Graff Diamond.

The theory that later Neanderthals might have been sufficiently advanced to fashion jewellery and tools similar to those of incoming modern humans has suffered a setback. A new radiocarbon dating study, led by Oxford University, has found that an archaeological site that uniquely links Neanderthal remains to sophisticated tools and jewellery may be partially mixed.
The study, published in the early online version of the journal PNAS, suggests that the position of key finds in the archaeological layers of the Grotte du Renne at Arcy-sur-Cure in France may not be trustworthy. The research team, from the UK and France, dated material from the site and discovered their radiocarbon ages were extremely variable and did not correspond with the expected sequence indicated by the excavated archaeological layers. The Grotte du Renne has 15 archaeological layers, covering a depth of about four metres spanning periods from the Mousterian to the Gravettian periods.

Sudbury Rock and Lapidary Society annual Gem and Mineral Show

Sparkling gems covered the tables at the Sudbury Gem & Mineral show this weekend, but attendance was down from last year.
Show chairman Ed Debicki said the weather was probably a factor because many are at camp enjoying the heat. The Dragon Boat Festival on Saturday may have also taken away from attendance, he said.
Nonetheless, the show was busy Saturday afternoon and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, said Debicki. The 22 dealers selling artistic gems, minerals and jewelry had no trouble making sales.
