Bonhams and Butterfields will auction off what is believed to be the world's second-largest documented pearl, a five-pound gem found off the coast of the Philippines that has been dubbed the "Palawan Princess."
The natural non-nacreous pearl was found in sal****er near the Philippines' Palawan island and "bears an uncanny resemblance to a human brain," the auction house said. Both rare and immense, the gem is thought to be surpassed in size only by the 14-pound "Pearl of Allah," an approximately 14-pound, 31,893.5-carat pearl that, like the Palawan Princess, was the product of the giant clam shell Tridacna gigas and was also found off the coastal waters of the Philippines.

Giant 507 carat stone
AIM-listed Petra Diamonds (PDL.L) said on Tuesday it had recovered one of the world's 20 largest, high-quality white diamonds at the Cullinan mine in South Africa.
The massive 507.55 carat diamond, found on Sept. 24, could be worth about $20 million, and is expected to cover costs at the mine for two years, Finance Director David Abery said.

"Initial examinations indicate that it is of exceptional colour and clarity" - Petra Diamonds, adding it was found alongside other large white diamonds of 168 carats, 58.50 carats and 53.30 carats.

"The Cullinan mine has again given the world a spectacularly beautiful and important diamond" - Chief Executive Johan Dippenaar, noting Cullinan was the source of the world's largest gem diamond ever recovered, at 3,106 carats rough.

The meteorites that come crashing down from space are often flecked with diamonds, though they are tiny and not of gem quality.
Hollywood jeweller Neil Lanes vision of diamond meteorites is, of course, much more glam.
Using the rough, amorphous chunks of space rock as inspiration, Lane has created dramatic platinum spheres, covered with diamonds, rock crystals and pearls.
Fittingly, Lane unveiled his Meteorite collection at the California premiere of Star Trek in May.

The ON-K120 Kimberlite is one of the largest diamond bearing kimberlites in the world, with a surface area totalling some 102 hectares situated within claims of the FALC-JV. The largest operating diamond mine is Orapa in Botswana and the mined AK1 kimberlite has an area 103 hectares.
A resource estimate has not yet been determined for the ON-K120 Kimberlite but kimberlite tonnage estimates, which are conceptual in nature, were published in the SGF News Release of November 21, 2006. No underground bulk sampling has been undertaken to date in Orion North. It is Shore's assertion that diamond loss and diamond  breakage occur (particularly of the large stones) in the case of the LDD mini-bulk samples.
