Just what is Manhattanhenge?

New Yorkers have witnessed an urban solar phenomenon, with the Sun setting in alignment with the city's skyscrapers and giving an effect fans say is reminiscent of Wiltshire's Stonehenge. Welcome to Manhattanhenge.

What will future civilizations think of Manhattan Island when they dig it up and find a carefully laid out network of streets and avenues? Surely the grid would be presumed to have astronomical significance, just as we have found for the pre-historic circle of large vertical rocks known as Stonehenge, in the Salisbury Plain of England. For Stonehenge, the special day is the summer solstice, when the Sun rose in perfect alignment with several of the stones, signalling the change of season.

Twice a year, people living in similar cities can watch  the "Manhattan-henge" effect  at sunset - where the grid of  buildings are in perfect alignment with the sunset. Any unobstructed view down a east-west street will show the setting Sun at the westward end.
These days are 30 May and 13 July. Sunset on 13 July is at 20:20 EDT.
Sunrise occurs at a cross-street on and around December 12 at 7:11 AM and  January 4 at 7:22 AM.
