Indonesia's steaming Mount Kelud volcano was dangerously close to an eruption on Monday as magma pushed through its blocked crater causing boiling water to spill down its sides, a volcanologist said on Monday. Water levels in the crater lake have also fallen because of cracks on its surface, damaging essential equipment used to monitor Mount Kelud, which has been on the verge of an eruption for several weeks.
Indonesia's Mount Kelud volcano has erupted, according to seismographic signals, but signs of any ash or lava are not visible because of heavy cloud cover, a top official said on Saturday.
Indonesia's Mount Kelud volcano appears to have erupted, a top official has said, based on seismographic signals. An estimated 350,000 people live within 10km (6 miles) of the volcano on the island of Java, about 90km (55 miles) south-west of the city of Surabaya. Kelud volcano located at the east of the island of Java has been just placed in state of alert 3 (on a scale on 4 levels) by the Indonesian authorities. Professor Alain Bernard (ULB) is currently on the spot. The researchers of the Laboratory of mineralogy and geochemistry of the ULB are making hour by hour observations. This Friday October 5, the access to the crater lake has been is prohibited, (including volcanologists).
The volcanic mud eruption was probably accentuated by a nearby (150 km) earthquake which occurred at the beginning of week. The volume of mud rejected each day passed in one week of 70.000 m3 to 100.000 m3. On Monday, a jolt a magnitude of 4,9 touched the town of Situbondo, in the east of the island of Java, to some 150 km in the south-east of the volcano, destroying houses.
