More than a 150 international astronomers and science communicators, including representatives from 14 African countries, have descended on Cape Town for the period of 15 to 19 March to discuss the success of the International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA2009) and the valuable lessons learned.
The Communicating Astronomy to the Public 2010 (CAP 2010) conference delegates, shared the numerous public activities hosted in their respective countries. These activities included stargazing, school visits, music shows, art exhibitions, games, dark sky awareness campaigns, etc. Mariana Espinosa from the Instituto de Astronomia in Mexico laid down the gauntlet, when talking about Mexico's World Guinness Record for the largest stargazing event. People all across Mexico had an opportunity to look at the night sky through about 1 100 telescopes on the 24th of October 2009. This Noche de las Estrellas ("Night of the Stars") event was the most successful IYA2009 event in Mexico.

The International Year of Astronomy 2009: The Largest Science Education and Public Outreach Event in History

The final count of countries involved stands at 148, a staggering number that confirms that the IYA2009 network is the largest ever in science. The International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA) is coming to an end. The German Aerospace Centre (DLR) celebrated IYA with exhibition 'Out of this World Wonders of the Solar System' in the Gasometer Oberhausen and the 'Astronomy Question of the Week'. Once a week, DLR experts answered a question. Many interested parties took the opportunity to use the special IYA website to ask questions. The final Astronomy Question of the Week is: "How old is the universe?"

On 9 and 10 January 2010 the International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA2009) will be brought to an official close with a ceremony to be held in Padova, Italy, in the Aula Magna of the University of Padova, where Galileo taught experimental physics and astronomy. The final event of this global celebration of astronomy and its contribution to society and culture will be attended by the key figures behind IYA2009 as well as prominent astronomers.

There have been events all over the globe, including in Pakistan, where the Khwarizmi Science Society (KSS) - one of the country's most active grass-roots science associations - has held numerous "astrofests", or falakyati melas, as they are known in Urdu.

A push is under way on Tyneside to encourage people to spend more time with the stars.
In October the Centre for Life in Newcastle opened its planetarium.
Now the centre is home to a prestigious exhibition which takes an offbeat approach to astronomy and astronomers.
The display, which marks the end of the International Year of Astronomy, is backed by a new planetarium show, a lecture and a six-week course for the amateur astronomer or the plain curious.
