Vatican celebrates astronomy day The Vatican and its scientific observatory are organising a celebration at the Vatican City on Friday and Saturday. The event coincides with the International Year of Astronomy, which will close on 9-10 January in the northern Italian city of Padova.
Carlsbad Caverns National Park extends an invitation to join in the celebration of the International Year of Astronomy and view the night sky. The park will host a Star Party and Celebration of the Night event beginning at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17. Monday launched a two-week astrophotography exhibit called "From Earth to the Universe" to celebrate the International Year of Astronomy. The University is showcasing scenes of the universe accompanied by scientific descriptions.
Bristol teenagers gaze at stars of the telescope world
More than 500 teenagers had the chance to use some of the most advanced telescopes in the world at an event in Bristol. The Institute of Physics held a lecture at the Hexagon Theatre at Kingsfield School in Kingswood to mark the International Year of Astronomy. Read more
This is the year to look through a telescope at the night skies, says Professor David Block, an internationally renowned astronomer who calls Joburg home. Block urges everyone to visit science parks:
"I would strongly recommend that people of all ages actually get a chance to look through a telescope at the night skies. The Astronomical Society of Southern Africa has a centre right in Johannesburg, wherein monthly viewing sessions through a telescope are held"

Southeastern Wisconsin astronomers and space enthusiasts plan to celebrate the "International Year of Astronomy" in suburban Milwaukee this weekend. The group, Wisconsin Astronomy, hopes to gather 100 telescopes across Greenfield Park in West Allis on Friday and Saturday nights.
