Vatican celebrates astronomy day
The Vatican and its scientific observatory are organising a celebration at the Vatican City on Friday and Saturday. The event coincides with the International Year of Astronomy, which will close on 9-10 January in the northern Italian city of Padova.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park extends an invitation to join in the celebration of the International Year of Astronomy and view the night sky.
The park will host a Star Party and Celebration of the Night event beginning at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17. The park is a perfect spot for viewing the wonders of the night sky due to its location away from the lights of local communities.

Bristol teenagers gaze at stars of the telescope world

More than 500 teenagers had the chance to use some of the most advanced telescopes in the world at an event in Bristol.
The Institute of Physics held a lecture at the Hexagon Theatre at Kingsfield School in Kingswood to mark the International Year of Astronomy.

This is the year to look through a telescope at the night skies, says Professor David Block, an internationally renowned astronomer who calls Joburg home.
Block urges everyone to visit science parks:

"I would strongly recommend that people of all ages actually get a chance to look through a telescope at the night skies. The Astronomical Society of Southern Africa has a centre right in Johannesburg, wherein monthly viewing sessions through a telescope are held"
