The Philippines will launch its own activities for IYA2009 on Jan. 19.
Over 130 countries, including the Philippines, have activities lined up to introduce people to the joys of looking up to the skies.
One of the local events being tied in to IYA2009 is the Philippine Astronomy Convention, which gathers professional and amateur astronomers around the country. Aside from poster sessions and exhibits, the convention is expected to end with a public stargazing session. This years convention is scheduled for Feb. 15 at the Rizal Technological University.

If you've ever contemplated space and the universe, you can obtain your own piece of a celestial body at the Automotion Museum in Bay View Mall.
The museum is selling meteorites in support of the International Year of Astronomy School Challenge.
The challenge has been organised by the Belleville Chapter of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC) in celebration of the International Year of Astronomy (IYA). Proclaimed by the United Nations, the highlight of IYA2009 is the 400th anniversary of Galileo's first use of an astronomical telescope to view the night sky.

Star gazers and planet watchers in schools nation-wide are in for a year-long feast of discovery, adventure and learning, much of it to be enjoyed without having to leave the comfort of their classrooms.
Interactive whiteboard suppliers, Promethean Ireland, has teamed up with Blackrock Castle Observatory in Cork to bring the International Year of Astronomy into the classroom in Ireland's schools.

Dark energy and alien civilisations are two of many topics to be covered when the International Year of Astronomy is celebrated in Kent.
Experts from across the county will give talks and workshops on numerous related subjects throughout 2009, starting with an opening ceremony at the University of Kent on Tuesday (January 20).

Telescopes are among the greatest marvels of civilization, and they reveal daily that the universe is vaster, stranger and more violent than Galileo could have imagined. He incited what has become a compulsion to tunnel deeper into the sky, and the universe shows no sign of running out of surprises.
This is going to be a particularly big year for telescopes, and not just because it's officially the International Year of Astronomy, featuring astronomy conferences, space-related art projects, and telescopes flooding the market at $10 and up. There will also be breaking news.

Diehard stargazers or amateur astronomers, all will have ways and means this year to bring the Universe closer to the Earth. Literally.
Marking the 400th anniversary of Galileo's first astronomical observation through a telescope, 2009 is being celebrated as the International Year of Astronomy. India, along with 134 other nations is part of the global celebrations which wish to promote astronomy and its contribution to society and culture.

C'est le 15 janvier que se tiendra la cérémonie inaugurale internationale de l'Année Mondiale de l'Astronomie à Paris, au siège de l'UNESCO, en présence de personnalités venues du monde entier. En France, ce sont plusieurs centaine projets qui se mettent en place pour partager avec le public une passion, des connaissances et des interrogations sur l'Univers. Un programme riche, destiné à des publics variés et notamment aux jeunes.
L'Année Mondiale de l'Astronomie, placée sous le thème "L'Univers, découvrez ses mystères" se veut une célébration de l'astronomie et de ses contributions à la société et à la culture. Un effort tout particulier est dédié à l'éducation et aux jeunes, ainsi qu'à la participation du grand public au niveau local, régional et national et mondial.

Dr. Andrea Schweitzer, a founding member of the Little Thompson Observatory and a local astronomy enthusiast, is excited to organise the United States celebration of astronomy in 2009. As project manager for the International Year of Astronomy, she will undoubtedly be busy coordinating the almost entirely volunteer-based project.

Across the globe there are some exciting events to observe, including the longest solar eclipse of this century in July, observable from China, India, and a few other countries. A dusk sighting of Jupiter in October in the Northern Hemisphere should give some dramatic views. And, the Leonid meteor shower in November 2009 is predicted to be one of most spectacular ever.
