Z Andromedae is a symbiotic variable star with an hourglass shaped nebula. It is the prototype for symbiotic variables, which are a subset of cataclysmic variables.
Z Andromedae brightens by about 3 magnitudes, every 10 - 20 years. The star reached a mean visual magnitude of 7.9 during a 1939 outburst.
