The 14 - 31 metre wide asteroid 2008 AF3 will make a close pass (35.6 lunar distances, 0.0915 AU), travelling at 6.01 km/second, to the Earth-Moon system on the 24th December, 2011 @ 05:21 UT ±00:18.

The Lunar Distance (LD), the distance between Earth and the Moon, equals 384,401 km, (or 0.00256 AU).

You will need a 12" diameter telescope to spot the magnitude 14 asteroid as it passes through Ursa Major this evening.

On Jan. 13, 2008, a 27 metre-wide asteroid, 2008 AF3, will make a close flyby (1.3 lunar distances) of the Earth. The asteroid will appear as a magnitude 14 star in the northern sky
