Shetlander gathered last night during "Up-Helly-Aa". Hundreds of residents of the Shetland Islands off the north coast of Scotland had a torchlight parade which ends an elaborately-crafted Viking longship dragged through the town of Lerwick and being set on fire.
"The Islanders are expected to dance and sing into the early hours of the morning."
The sky above Lerwick was aglow last night as thousands of revellers turned out to celebrate centuries of tradition at Shetland's legendary Up-Helly-Aa festival. Hundreds of hours of craftsmanship went up in flames as the replica Viking longship was reduced to ashes in the events spectacular climax. Locals were joined by visitors who flocked from around the world to watch the festival pay homage to the isles' Nordic roots.
Lerwick will be lit up by hundreds of flaming torches tonight when the biggest event in Shetland's social calendar gets under way.
