Cyclone Nargis (JTWC designation: 01B, also known as Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Nargis), was a strong tropical cyclone that caused the worst natural disaster in the recorded history of Myanmar. The cyclone made landfall in the country on May 2, 2008, causing catastrophic destruction and at least 138,000 fatalities.

The official death toll for Burma's cyclone disaster has jumped to almost 78,000 people, with nearly 56,000 missing, according to state TV.

The UN has sharply increased its estimate of those severely affected by Burma's cyclone to 2.5m people.
The figure was revised up from the 1.5m previously thought to be in need, following the storm 12 days ago.
Since Cyclone Nargis struck, hardly any foreign aid workers have been allowed into Burma to hand out relief supplies.
